The inaugural Steampunk Adventurers Weekend is launching in West Palm Beach on November 12 & 13. Sounds fun, but what is Steampunk?
Steampunk is a fun mixture of Victorian style, America’s Wild West, and science fiction. Science fiction author K.W. Jeter created the term Steampunk in 1987 to describe a type of fantasy fiction inspired by the Victorian era and industrial technology powered by steam.
Steampunks are time travelers. They represent a subculture of adventurers celebrating an alternative reality filled with retro-futuristic inventions and styles.
Steampunk also refers to any art, culture, fashion, literature, or live entertainment that has developed from the aesthetics of steampunk fiction. Steampunk has made its way to mainstream culture too. You may recognize movies like Will Smith’s Wild Wild West, Van Helsing starring Hugh Jackman, Robert Downey Jr. in Guy Richie’s Sherlock Holmes, or Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow with Angelina Jolie. All these films feature elements of Steampunk.
Plus, Steampunk bands like Abney Park are selling out venues, and Steampunk authors often grace the NYT Bestseller List. You have likely seen and experienced Steampunk many times, even if you didn’t quite know what it was.
What can you expect at Steampunk Adventurers Weekend? As you enter Yesteryear Village in West Palm Beach, you will feel like you traveled through time and landed in the early 1900s for the best gathering in town. This living museum park is based on life pre-1940s.
Time Travelers of all ages will explore activities and shows throughout the day. Young adventurers will enjoy Steampunk balloon art, face painting, Tinkerer’s Depot crafts, rides, and games. Adult adventurers can attend lectures, shop our exhibitors in Makers Way, visit our Authors Collective, and enjoy games like tea and parasol dueling. We have fashion shows for kids and adults, Steampunk party music playing all day, and live concerts with bands like Abney Park and The Cog is Dead’s John Sprocket. Plenty of food and beverages will fuel all guests for their exciting Steampunk experience.
What do you wear to Steampunk Adventurers Weekend? You will want to include items like vests, corsets, and top hats. Then accessorize with industrial touches like buckles, goggles, leather gloves, chains, gears, and keys. Swing by your local Halloween store and shop in the Steampunk section. We are open to all cosplayers and travelers from any period. Steampunk attire is admired but not required.
