“We are excited to kick off summer with an event that is free to the public and includes incredible art and activities for kids,” says Executive Director Jeni Licata. “We look forward to welcoming our summer campers on June 6th and are excited for our 2-day teen workshops in jewelry, glass, ceramics, felting, and cosplay.”

The ArtCenter’s Shorr Gallery is exhibiting original illustrations from the bestselling “Fancy Nancy” children’s book series by Robin Priess Glasser; original illustrations from two of Author/Illustrator Roxie Munro’s latest award-winning children’s books, Bryan Ballinger’s playful plastic 3D Faulty Dogs, and a Makerspace with animation software.

Storytime includes a story from the “Fancy Nancy” book series by author Jane O’Connor and illustrator Robin Priess Glasser. The first “Fancy Nancy” book was published in 2005 and spent nearly 100 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list. With over 80 books, this endearing children’s series has sold over 40 million copies worldwide. The series’ main character, Nancy, is known for her fabulous and fancy sense of style, admirable self-confidence, and use of big fancy words. After storytime, kids are invited to enjoy tea and a craft where they can make their own fancy hats and take photos in front of the original illustrations on exhibit by Robin Priess Glasser.

Also included in storytime are books by author/illustrator Roxie Munro. Munro has written and illustrated more than 45 award-winning nonfiction and concept children’s books and has illustrated 14 New Yorker magazine covers. On exhibition are her original illustrations from “Dive In” and “Anteaters, Bats and Boas” and a selection of her New Yorker cover illustrations.

Munro’s illustrations from both “Dive In” (2020) and “Anteaters, Bats & Boas” (2021) are exhibited in a colorful segmented mural. The illustrations are true-to-size sea creatures and rainforest animals living in their colorful ecosystems. “Anteaters, Bats & Boas” was recently awarded Bank Street Best Children’s Book of the Year 2022 and was recognized by American Scientist as one of the Top 12 STEM Books for children. After storytime, kids can create safari pith helmets in the craft station and take a photo in front of the murals.

Bryan Ballinger (aka Breadwig) is an illustrator for children’s books, websites, games, videos, ads, large and small scale murals, 3d toy design, and fine art photography. Ballinger’s “Faulty Dogs,” exhibited in the Gallery, are printed in plastic through a 3D printer. These playful pups will inspire kids to use the animation software and 3D printers available in the ArtCenter’s Makerspace. The Makerspace is free for all to create and design three-dimensional objects on Saturdays throughout the summer.
